I finally finished Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. It took me a really long time - about 3 weeks - to finish this book. While it was good to read, it was also difficult to read because I had to really concentrate on the story, it's written different than what I'm used to. I haven't read a lot of literature like this so hopefully any books in the future I read that are similar will go much quicker! I did enjoy the story but was SO frustrated at times! I had to keep reminding myself it is taking place in the 1700's. No phones, no cars, and apparently not very many of them had jobs either. It was unusual to me that in most of the settings it's a bunch of people always eating together, going to balls, going on trips to visit other families, etc. Also all the marriages that were arranged, it's such a ridiculous thought to not marry someone because of how much money they do or do not have. It would be so hard to have to live that way - I can't imagine Jeff only marrying me because he stood to financially gain from it. I felt bad for the girls who had no chance to marry because they didn't have money to offer. Obviously we've come along way since then ;) My favorite character was Elinor, I can relate to her best, she is the level headed one and doesn't over react. I liked Marianne but she annoyed me in a few parts - fainting when she heard something unfavorable - she's a drama queen! I really liked the book, I went to this site to help me understand some of what was going on in the book - it helped me with books in high school too ;) I'll probably be taking a break from this style of writing for a few books...my brain needs an easier read.
Anyway, on to the next book! Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. My sister-in-law Heather said she really enjoyed it. I'm about 18 pages in and I've already almost cried once :( but it's going fast already. On a side note: the weather has finally cleared up but it's COLD! Jeff's tires are encased in ice. Yesterday morning it was feeling a little like Christmas then later we were watching Sleepy Hollow (the one with Johnny Depp) and it started feeling like Halloween. I think I'm ready for spring.
Leaving to go to dinner with a frozen tree above my head

I get irritated with Austin's books too. I think it is sad to think that the romance in the novels is fiction. When you read (and when I say read, I mean I watched the movie) about Austin's real life, it is kind of depressing. I loved the movie Emma but I have a hard time reading that book.
I need to see the Jane Austen movie! I wanted to read the Jane Austen books after I watched The Jane Austen Book Club. It was good. I read Pride and Prejudice too and now I want to watch the movie. I've never seen any of the movies based on the books...aren't most of them pretty long? I think I read that Emma was one of the more difficult books to read. I kept falling asleep about 5 pages in every time with S & S. Are you reading anything right now?
Those "old" books are hard to read. I generally just skip the book and watch the movie- ha ha! When you are ready for another piece like that- one where you have to concentrate a bit more, then I highly suggest reading THE WOMAN IN WHITE by Wilkie Collins. - it was the last book I read before I had Rowan- actually, I was reading it the morning I went into labor :0) I had to finish the last few pages after we brought the lil dude home. I liked it - it was a mystery!
Yeah, fictionalized romance is scripted, plasticized romance. It still makes a good movie, though, LOL. :) I prefer reading the Bronte sisters to Jane Austen, although I LOVE her wit. ;)
Glad you're enjoying your latest book! I look forward to your review! :)
And I sure hope the weather warms up enough for your hubby to get his training done - waiting for progress is HARD!!!
